The Edge of Vastness

Dear Members & Attenders,

I was privileged to take a trip to the Grand Canyon last week.  I drove out and back with my two youngest children, Abby and Campbell.  It really was the trip of a lifetime, and what we saw was hard to express precisely because it was SO amazing.  Many times we were simply dumbstruck – speechless.

A picture summed up the challenge (and you may need to zoom in on the upper left corner)…

If the National Park Service can say that about a geographic feature, what can we say about our God?

His infinite greatness moves us at least to two opposite postures – humility and confidence.  In Psalm 8, King David expressed the first sensibility: “When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers… what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?”  We are really small in the grand scheme of things.  “We are but dust.”

And in Romans 8, the Apostle Paul rejoiced with the second: “What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?”  If God became human in Christ, to save us from all that we’ve done wrong, then what is there to fear?  The GREATEST power in all existence is FOR us, no longer against us.  Why then should we live in any fear?

Things to pray for:

–  Awe.  Ask the LORD to help you to “see Him” in His glory and for you to be at “the edge of vastness.”

–  Humility.  Ask the Holy Spirit to help you to humble yourself, as Peter says, “under His mighty hand so that at the proper time He may exalt you.” (1 Peter 5:6)

–  Confidence in God’s infinite greatness!  Meditate on Romans 8:31-39 and if you trust in Jesus as your God and Savior, ask Him to help you grow in your confidence in His redeeming power and faithfulness.

–  Growing love for the LORD.  Time at the Grand Canyon only made me want more time there.  As you glimpse the edge of vastness of the LORD’s infinite greatness, pray that the Spirit would grow in you the fruit of love for Him – and all those whom He has made.
